Skiing in Cumbria

A beautiful morning with snow down to 500mtrs saw Ed, Rich and I along with our two Collies Keela and Tally set off for a Ski in the northern Lakes in Cumbria to Great Dodd. The day clouded over and the Siberian winds picked up making eating our lunch on the summit a bit of an numb hands struggle. Great cold snow with a twinkle and almost setting off from the car park brought an icy grin to our faces. The dogs were loving being in the Snow and were digging and running at every snowball.

A great day had and hopefully more to come.

Scottish Winter Conditions 14/15 Jan 2012

I have just been up to Scotland in the Cairngorms this weekend and here are some pics from the trip.

Here is Claire and Stuart Holmes taking some pics of runners coming off Latrigg. And here is Claire happy to be out in the sunshine along with an old friend of mine Zac Poulton.

Keela came with us and had a great time running around in the sun as we went up and down to get the right shot.

you can see a clip here of her from last edition of Trail Running Magazine when she was snow kayaking last year. Claire liked the video and included a still from it on a feature running with dogs.

Cold Wet Windy Dovedale Day

Here's a few pictures from a cold wet windy day out with Keela the dog around Dovedale in the Lake District. The storms came through as we got to the top of Dove Crag and the visibility decreased and winds increased. Sloppy wet snow on the ground and hail storms didn't help me or Keela. I put some glasses on to protect my eyes and they were useful above the freezing level at 750mtrs; they steamed up a bit below that. I was using a fantastic pair of Montane Ice Grip Gloves These are waterproof and warm and you can get them on and off with wet hands. they also have a great level of dexterity I could press my camera buttons with them on. Not sure about opening a Starbust sweet though!

Tour De Helvellyn

This years Tour De Helvellyn took place over the weekend. Well done all involved Kim Collinson managed to get round in just over 6 Hrs. He must of heard the soup had been turned on. and didn't want to miss out on it. Well done to all involved and the support team. Like a swan on the water!! Some great conditions saw Sticks Pass giving the whole crew a very cold blasting and even a few glimpses of sunshine. Snowshoe Trips this Winter

Here is some great and useful information about doing something with a difference.
Snowshoeing has really taken off due to a few factors; the economic situation at the moment means that an alternative to expensive ski holidays are being looked at. It helps with overall fitness, gets you out to areas you generally cant with skis and snowboards. Its has a very family and friendly atmosphere and if you are concerned with the environmental issues of winter sports, Snowshoeing is a must. If you do want any more information or book onto a course please let me know. We use a fantastic place in the Julian Alps of Slovenia, or in the Alps and if the weather is with us in Scotland.

Mini Adventure in the Lakes

Joe from Nav4 and I had a quick chat in the morning and by 12.30 we were off to walk over the Coniston Fells to the Duddon Valley.

We then planned to stay over and have a pint in The Newfield Inn in Seathwaite and then walk back over old Lancashires Highest peak. Coniston Old Man. WE had all sorts of weather conditions and took Keela my Dog and Molly a friends dog. She is under training with SARDA.

We went from 3 Shires Stone and traversed over Dow Crag and down Walna Scar to reach Duddon in 3 Hrs.

Day 2 we went past Seathwaite Reservior and then over the Old Man Swirl Howe and back to 3 Shires in 3 hrs. Great full day out and good company and beer. Cheers!!

Sunny Day on High Seat Borrowdale

Here are a few pics from a gret sunndy day out run with Keela the dog around Bleaberry Fell and High Seat near to Borrowdale in Cumbria.
This is a picture of my thumb nail 3 months and now ready to come off.

Its a very boggy route but has some stunning scenery of the Lake District finest and biggest fells.

Here is the view from the Trig point on High Seat looking toward the Helvellyn range. I was using the Viewranger app on my phone which worked very well. The new path to cut out the boggy sections just took me the wrong way back to Shepherds Crag cafe. Great day out. Montane Minimus Test

I was recently sent a great jacket from Montane. Its another in the family of the Kyrpton Jacket, which I had a sample of but made from Pertex Shield. This is a waterproof and breathable taped seam jacket and weighs only 227gms. As such it makes it suitable for Mountain Marathons such as the OMM, LAMM etc. It small enough and light enough to stuff into a pack or on back of harness for the windy and wet days when you get caught out on the hill or crag. The hood is excellent is takes a helmet easily and the closure keeps out the elements. The styling is great with a vivid green and contract red zip, available in other colours. Its minimalistic as the name suggests and sports only one very well thought out pocket with compass/key D ring attachment. The cuffs are velcro closed to keep out the wet stuff. Reflective patches will be useful for the night user. Its another "must have" jacket from Montane. Look out for it in my pictures of my adventures...

IML Meet

Scafell Pike Trip

Here are a few pics from my quick trip up Scafell Pike today in the sunshine; back down for lunch at home.
Plenty of the wildlife feeling the heat have a look at the happy sheep and the tap and the dogs in the water. A little bit of snow still in the gully on Great End.
Bumped into Kate from Mountain Life at Reghed on her way up as we were coming down. It was a little bit hazy on the top and we couldn't quite see the Isle of Man or North Wales. Had a great run down and a good recce for a group coming up with me soon. If you have a 3 peaks adventure in mind please let me know.

Warm Day on the Roman Way Lake District

Out with Joe of Nav4 and Tara and the two dogs Keela and Oscar. Joe doing some training and Recceing of the Montane 100 We met up for a cup of tea and a muffin before setting off on the east lakeland section of the route. Its quite a warm day hence Joe in a vest!

We set off from near Pooley Bridge and walked over Arthurs Pike and Loadpot Hill on some lovely dry conditions. Finishing up at the head of Haweswater. Great day out and good laugh.

"Hi guys,

I'm just back from the Highlander MM. Had a fantastic time, and learned heaps (mostly what not to do next time!) The course was tougher than I expected, with some decidedly tricky checkpoints. Finding a "safe" descent from the top of a 70m cliff is not easy! The organisers also seem to think it's funny to occasionally hide a checkpoint kite behind rocks.

We made a couple of minor mistakes, one terrible one (costing us about 45 minutes of painful backtracking!), but had a success here and there. Most importantly, we finished!

Thanks heaps, Stu. Your skills course made a huge difference, can't imagine how I could have done the event without it."

Jon Gupta decided to call in on his way to Scotland for his Winter ML Assessmentat Glenmore Lodge.
There has bee some great snow in the Cairngorms recently.
We went out onto some bleak featureless hills. Sadly no snow to be seen but some challenging navigation terrain. We went round a progressive course and then back for tea and medals (nutella really!). Had a great day chatting and catching up and best of wishes to Jon, Ben and Bruce. I think they are all on same assessment.

Whilst out for a run on Barton Fell near to the beautiful Ullswater Valley on a brilliant Spring like sunny day. I bumped into Chris and Rich from Cycleactive doing some filming with MTB Cut. Their backdrop was fantastic with a small patchwork of snow on Helvellyn in the distance. I think there will be some skills videos possibly for production in the near future. One to look out for! I set off from the car in shorts and windproof top. It was only windy and stoill a bit sunny. On reaching the first top I could see the rain/ sleet approaching turned round and dressed in what i had with me in the car. On the way back up I took sevearl pics as I couldnt hold my camera still.

Have a look at the synoptic chart for the day and you will see why its so windy. I would recommend checking the weather every time you venture out to see what the change will be during the day.

The Prophet

In a week where the 17th Jan is said to be Blue Monday. I had a tax return to do and watched a film called the Prophet starring Leo Houdling. Back in the day when I was in Bolton with the glitterati of 80/90's climbing. Paul Pritchard,, Mike Lovatt, Mark Leach, Phil Kelly, Hank Pasquill,
There was another Prophet known as Tony Preston. I met him at Bolton Climbing wall on a thursday night, ran by Mike Quinn and Deninis Gleeson. I used to run with Tony on the 3 towers and X-Country races and others. Its very sad news that Tony died on 2nd Jan. He will be greatly missed.

Avalanches in the UK

This could be a very valuable resource for all mountain users. The use of tranceivers in the UK is becoming more prevalent and should not be disregarded. There have been several accidents this year and last in England alone, along with fatalities.

If you are a serious winter mountaineer consider going on a transceiver course.

Short Walk on Helvellyn

Yesterday Simon, Glen, Steve and myself went for a short walk on Helvellyn. Practising some winter skills of movement and snow/ weather observations. The use of ice axes and a short journey
As you can see the weather detoriated during the day and snow fell on strong westerlies above 400Mtrs
During the day visibility came down and as we dropped back down to the car the snow turned to rain. This will possiblity consolidate the new snow on top of some old snow and ice. Please remember to take full winter kit with you incl map, compass, torch, crampons and ice axe. If you would like to know about turining your Summer skills into Winter Skills do not hesitate to contact me.

Christmas Eve in the Drug Tank

Christmas Eve and its still cold in the Lakes. -9C at home at 06.30. A quick ring around and although still feeling groggy I met up with Ben, John and Craig at 07.30 for a quick trip up Launchy Gill. A great start saw us ditching our rucksacks and heading up, its a bit weird not carrying a winter sac but liberating. A few teams were ahead of us but as we soloed a few pitches we soon passed them. Good to see Paulo and Dominic in the gyhll. At the main falls we had a play around. I felt the cold a bit after still feeling unwell and warming up and cooling down
After a cuple of hours Craig had to goto work at Cyclewise in Whinlatter , Ben and John carried on to find another gyhll and I came home for a second breakfast.

Le Tour de Helvellyn en Hiver 2010

I have been working with Joe Faulkner of NAV4 on the first running of a potential classic fell run on the shortest weekend of the year. There was heavy snow at the start at 7.30 in the morning but the day brightened. The roads to the checkpoints proved to be very interesting, the temperature during day remained well below zero and was approx -10C at Askham at the finish.

Have a look at the results and more pics on Facebook and NAV4 website. A long cold day for the runners, marshalls, and a sterling job from Lindsey and her mum in the kitchen. Congratulations to Joe for a great job done on the event and the efforts of everyone involved for putting it together.

Skiing on Blencathra

I set off today on a bright and sunny day after some lunch at home andthought about some skiing to exercise me and the dog. Blencathra looked fantastic as I drove into the Lakes. A skin up Scales Fell ridge to the top and back down in time for hot vimto and a brandy snap seemed to fit the bill.

After climbing up to the top of the combe, the cold northerly 20mph wind was blowing the fine powder around. I put on my skins and set off for the summit. It was such a great day, just wearing a pair of Montane terra thermic pants and a Montane Kyrpton Jacket Iwas toasty going up hill. Click on the link to Outdoor Warehouse for technical info on this new jacket, its a fantastic piece of kit with a great hood, that I have worn for all sorts of Adventures!

Some great vistas today the whole of the pennines lakes and southern scotland covered in white. Sadly my camera battery died and I only got shots on the way up. 20 mins back down after a couple of falls that Keela dog thought was great and exciting. There's supposed to be a bit of a thaw towards weekend and then poss a freeze again. It may consolidate the snow I hope so.

Winter Snow Kayak and Canoe

Here is another option for some winter fun. You just need a kayak or canoe or sledge, a slope and a video recorder. Then slide down and walk back up. Half of it is great fun the other half is quite a hot job. Hows your winter fun going? Winter Climb on Helvellyn 30-11-10

On St Andrews day in unusual conditons for the time of year me and Steve decided on an afternoon climb on Helvellyn. It would mean a quick walk in from Glenridding as the roads are quite slippy at the moment. After a quick bite to eat and gearing up I had forgot the guidebook and with very little visibilty from red tarn we had to guess at a route. After a short time we arrived on the summit wind break, a great relief as we had strong easterlies blowing up the gully. Note our iced up faces as spindrift came upwards. Down Swirral Edge and back to the car at 5 just in the dark. If you have any plans to convert your Summer experiences to Winter get in touch as I will be running some Winter Skills courses.

Gate Gill near Keswick Cumbria

Had a day out on my day off having a busman's holiday and going Gyhll Scrambling with Keela and Sarah.
We went to a Grade 4, in some places, Gate Gyhll near Keswick in Cumbria. A really hot day meant no water in the hardest parts.

This meant that the harder sections were made easier whilst moving Keela dog around. She is really getting very good. Having a Ruff Wear harness from Outdoor Warehouse in Windermere on helps with lifting and clipping onto if needed. Some sections are a bit loose with a tree down across the whole river bed.

I would advocate the use of helmets and in some gyhlls the use of a rope to protect yourself. We had a great safe day out then into Keswick for a beer and some food.

Its been a Long Time Since Last Time. We have a new government and the Summers on its way. Been playing and working and now have time to catch up on here with a summary.

Have been out and met some great folk. Worked with Mountain Guide Chris Ensoll on a MLTA workshop in the Lakes Teaching Movement on Steep Ground. Worked with Caroline and Paul Lewis, Pete Stacey in the Peak District assessing D of E assessors. Chris Ash and his mates in the Peak on an Adventure Race navigation course. Played on the Lakes Segways and worked with Proactive Development on their Lakes PDC. It seems a long time since Steve Hamer and the Bolton girls had a winter day on Helvellyn, but it was a great do.

Avalanches in the UK

Blue Sky Snowy Lake District Days

College of West Anglia Snowshoe Course

Last week I was lucky enought to be asked to lead some students from College of West Anglia on their Snowshoe course in a beautiful remote part of the French Pyrenees near to St Giron. We had a mix of weather during the week meaning that Bruno Steve and I had to mix the course up somewhat so we could get to the venues safely.

We covered some basic Avalanche transceiver work and snow pit digging and anaylsis.

The group were very keen to explore this ancient method of alpine transport. They managed to climb some remote and snowy cols and peaks up to 1800mtrs.

The return travel was not without its eyebrow raising moments as we had to travel across country at 20mph due to the snow, then rediredt to another airport to fly out on our already delayed flight back to UK. I had beeen on the go for approx 19 hours when I finally got to bed.

Feburary ML Training and Assessment

I have been working this week with two great groups on an ML Assessment and Training with Chris Ensoll.

There has been some white stuff around which has added to the candidates tales and pleasures.
It was a little cold overnight on the expedition but everyone had a tremendous time and left smiling.

Myself and Chris have been testing some new Montane kit in some very testing enviromentswith some very favourable results. Please get in touch if you want to know more. Alpen Glow and Moon Rise

After a great cold day out with the dog on a low level walk around GlenRidding and Grisedale, Nordic and Celtic Names for the valleys, (Get in touch if you want to more about the Nordic names) .
There was almost an alpenglow on the mountains of Nethermost.

Then to top it all a beautiful moon rise over, Ullswater, showing a lunar halo and Venus. Somedays the office shouldnt be tided up, it's just right. Have a click on the terms mentioned and come out to experinence them for yourselves.

Short Break In Scotlad

Here is a short video of Ski Touring that I did this week, in some good winter conditions in the Cairngorms. I stayed on after doing some Winter Training with Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team. The weather at the weekend was great and then during the week deterioated. 85+mph Northerlys today and white out conditions.

Brilliant Mini Hillwalk

Just at the end of the thaw a few of us went climbing in Borrowdale on something that felt like semi solid jelly fishes.

Today I have been on a brilliant mini hill walk that has it all at a low altitude. Steep Climb craggy tops, mixed woodland and a river walk. Even has a historic church to have a look round. If you are interested get in touch. The thaw in the lakes continues but there have been reports of avalanches so please be careful, if in doubt get in touch and I will help with your adventure as much as I can.

Winter's Thaw

A Day out with Steve and two dogs Keela and Oscar on Sour Milk Gyhll Borrowdale. There was a definate thaw going on as water cascaded down on the ice. I fell in at one point and held onto my axes to try and keep my feet dry.

A Winters Tale

First week of a new decade and Winter still has its grip on us. After returning from the Julian Alps in Slovenia, where the snow was washed off after 3 solid days of rain, ensuring flood warnings as rivers rose 15ft!

I came back to do some work with the Army and then had a days playing in the grounds of my house. Have a look at the videos for more fun. I then went out to help with the BBC filming The Lakes Ski Club. This was requested by the BBC through Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team as they have specalist training and vehicles.

Rhona McLeod, the BBC Sport Scotland Presenter walked up for 2 hours in 25mph winds only to find the tow on Raise had just derailed. Therefore only having one ski then back down to the valley. Testing conditions on the hill but still a great day out. If you want to sample the hills safely before the thaw continues in the Lakes don't hesitate to get in touch.

A Windy Winter Day on Striding Edge

Welcome to the New Year and after all the bells and fireworks a few of us went for a very windy and snowy walk up Striding Edge on Helvellyn. We then came down Swirral Edge back to the cars after some 50-60 mph gusts on the summit. There were a few people out but not as many as I expected. I hope that 2010 brings you some Adventures.

Seasons Change

Since my last post the seasons have definatly taken a change toward Winter. The mornings are getting darker when I am working with the Army. They have a great "nip to the nose" feel along with some stunning sunrises and sunsets. I have been also working with Chelmsford Girls School on their second training weekend for Greenland 2010 with Bull Expedtions. We had horrendous weather here in the Lakes 80mph winds and heavy rain, but the weekend was a success with the girls going home tired and smiling.

I have completed my first LDWA event in approx 10 years over the weekend with Morecambe and Bowland Group. 21 miles and 4000ft ascent, it took me 5.15 Hrs. It follwed the Derwent lake skyline from Rosthwaite to Keswick and return over Catbells. Thanks to Barry from Bootle for the chat all the way round. A great informal event with no prizes no winners but a great day out good company and loads of tea!

More Stuff

Well its been another busy period since my last post. I have been working at several differnt places an ML assessment with Chris Ensoll in the Lake District. With the Army taking Adventure Training with Recurits and then with Apex Training doing a D of E gold practice with a group from Charters School. This was a great last night wild camping. We sat and watched the stars and satellites with some hot chocolate "special mix" and some strong cheese and caviar. This I thought tasted strange as it should, but it was 14 years old!!
I have also been out with a group From Silva compasses with a group from Up and Running doing some navigation Training in North East Lakes.
During this time I have also competed in the Lake District Mountain Trial. This was a very hot day with a lot of the old school of mountain runners taking part. A great day out am not sure of my finishing position.

I have also just done the Rab Mountain Marathon a Two day event in the Howgills. Again not sure of position as a solo entrant. Now I have a few days off. Hooray!

Even on Robinson

Well its been a long time since my last post. I have spent the summer in Ladakh working for World Challenge and Stamford School. We were heading for Stok Kangri at 6000mtrs after trekking for 12 days over 4000mts. Unfortunately we didnt summit due to me being ill and bad weather. But a good trip all the same, then to the plains at 47C and the Taj Mahal. Back to the UK and its been like a monsoon here. I have worked with the Army and Apex training on a ML Training course. If its bank holiday its generally wet but we had a windy day out on Robinson with Sarah, Tara and the dogs an a great day biking in Scotland.

Adventure Week

Working this week with Windermere St Annes Year 6 end of year Adventure Week. We had the best of the weather, unlike one just under 4 weeks ago when it snowed! Three groups had a fantastic adventure on Hellvelyn, Climbing and Gyhll Scrambling. Thanks to Sarah, Caz and Sarah and all other staff who came along for all their help. To top off the week a Bivi by the shores of Windermere including the burining of marshmallows....

Going for Gold!!

Another great week. First of all with The Army, working with some of the best soliders in the British Army, The Gurkhas. True Genlemen and a great willingness to learn and perform at their best. Congratulations to Joanna Lumley for all her work done for Gurkha rights.

At the Weekend I was then camping with the Going for Gold group. A wild camp with 10-11 year olds from Windermere St Annes Elleray School. A visionary program put together to better the education to primary school age groups; offered by using the Outdoors as a learning tool. We had a great campsite located near to Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England. Night navigation and campcraft skills were practised by a great group. I hope they go on to complete the Gold standard and use this as a starting point for greater adventures that they have in mind.

Four Seasons in One Week !!

End of May and begininng of June gave us a four seasons start to the middle of the year.
I was running part of the Cumbrian Way with Sarah and Keela our dog in 25C on Saturday. I then worked with a great group of four lads and three staff from Red Balloon London at Ormside Mill near Appleby. During the week we paddled on Ullswater in 25C and rock climbed and then the lads did an independant climb up Blencathra in cooler conditions. On Friday it snowed on the summits of the Pennines and higher fells!!
Sunday saw Sarah, Keela and I on Intake Ridge a 3* scramble in the Lakes in a cold wind but bracing.

A great adventure day out and if you have one in mind its easy to get in touch and make it happen.

In the Drink Again!!!

Its been wet weather again hooray! and boo!! I have been bringing in controls from the GLD3 weekend. A great event of stature and self reliance 3 days out running. Boo!! to that as it was snowing and very wet windy and cold bringing those in. Hooray cos I was doing a Swiftwater Rescue course with Howie Crook at Re-Think training. Maryport Rescue crew were also on the course based in the Southern Lakes. The water was cold even in May and I was very glad of my wetsuit shorts and knee pads under my Lomo drysuit. I found the drysuit brilliant, at a great price with all the added extras that I need. Even a relief zip is included and let me say its a great relief to have it after being in the cold water. Howie had also got a set of Lomo suits so we all looked very professional and turned a few heads as a group of eight in yellow and black. A very good course and well delivered and great to meet up with the volunteer crew of the lifeboat. I hope i never have to use them in the best sense. Another week of unseasonally wet weather. "All the skies are grey...."
I have been helping Joe Faulkner at NAV4 out with the GLD3 event. A tough solo lakeland challenge for runners. Planning the course and putting out and taking in markers is a challenge in itself.I have been testing a new OMM rucksack, the very aptly named OMM-i-Drate. Its now on sale in some shops but not up on OMM website as yet. Its a 15 ltr sack ideal for a cross over of sports. Ski climb bike run etc. It has a bladder level visibilty panel in the centre of the pack and of course all the usual linking features that you have come to expect with OMM gear of late. That means this will connect onto bigger packs and the Trio chest pouch and OMM-i-Gamy aslo add invaluable usable space. I think its a great pack very stable and versatile that I have used over several months now.

The picture above is the edge of the world as seen from Hellvelyn summit on a minging wet Tuesday after Bank Holiday Monday. On my 1hr 40 min journey up and down I collected 7 banana skins and 2 orange peels. Please do not dispose of litter like this! Its my office! Striding Edge with Keela

A days to long to be doing admin for all of it at at this time of year. A quick text to Bernie then up Striding Edge on Helvellyn then down Swirral Edge with Bernie Keela and Skye for a three hour extended lunch break today.

We saw the last of the sugary cornices around the edges and the start of the work on the new path which avoids the face of Helvellyn. A great warm spring day with a gentle breeze on the ridges with a few people out and about.

We travelled very light weight with windproof Montane tops and OMM Ultra wasitpack. Keela was using a Ruffwear Webmaster Harness, this aided in moveing her whilst on the edges. She didnt need it though and at 10 months old proved to be very agile.

Peak District, Wales and back to Lakes

This week has been busy in a mixture of weather terrain and driving. I was working with Bull Expeditions in the Peak District planning a Greenland Trip with CCHS for 2010. Then working with Proactive Development and Simon McElroy in North Wales. A great trip over Snowdon in some very cold conditions on the summit then down to finish the day at LLanberis. Climbing was awesome and the Port Merrion day magaical. A fantastic busy full week with a great group. I also had a meeting on the way North with Laurence at Seren Ventures. Then back up to the Lakes for the Spring Nav4 weekend. I had a very strong group of Adventure Racers and runners. Mixed weather and night navigation saw some big smiles on all concerned faces. A busy time for me but very rewarding. Time now to spend a bit of time with Sarah and Keela.

Snowshoeing in France

A busy week of week of snowshoeing with Tara in France staying with most aminable host Phill Jarrett of British Snowshoe Tours. It was his birthday while we were out there and celebrated in style. Chamonix is expensive at the moment due to exchange rate. £5 for a beer!!

A great week with the weather being warmer than the UK but made the avalanche forecast a bit higher. We were out for four days recce-ing routes and one dy on cross country skis. One day we snowshoed up to 2000 mtrs then donned blades and skied back down, rather like beginners on mountainering boots!! My OMM Villan rucsac and Ultra waistbelt coped brilliantly with all the carrying needs of all the different tools needed during the week.
I then worked the weekend with Ben Keen and Bishop Wordsworth School on their D of E Gold Training in Patterdale Cumbria. A complete mixture of weather tested all involved, a great group and I wish them the best of luck on their final expedition.

Ramblings on and on

This last couple of weeks has seen me busy with the Army. Nav4 symposium and working with Chris Ensoll on a Mountain Leader Training and Assessment in the Lake District.
I then drove up to Aveimore, thanks to the local constabulary for reminding me of the speed limit! I was working at Glenmore Lodge for the MCof S Student Intro to Winter Skills weekend. My group of 5 are studying to be vets at Royal Dicks College in Edinburgh. We had a good weekend and found some very wet snow after the great thaw.

Winter Skills in The Lake District

Thanks to Bernie and Anja for a great day out in the Lake District learning some new skills to help with their confidence to get out more safely in winter. A full on day with good conditions. Eastly winds bowing powder snow and some blue sky moments all helped. The snow was great and helped with the digging of belays and Bernie and Anja showed some nice balance on and off crampons. Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team and the Air Ambulance were busy with two call outs on Saturday; both rely on donations if you are able to help.

A huge thank you to Stu for a fantastic winter skills course on saturday. He shared a huge amount of skills and knowledge with us and helped our confidence grow massively. We both found Stu to be a brilliant coach by creating a safe and productive learning environment with a great big lump of humour thrown in to complete the equation. We cant wait to go out with him again and really enjoyed digging up just a bit more snow today! Thanks again Stu, Anja and Berni.

Long Hours Travelling

This week I have been working for BPE interviewing potential candidates for a Expedition to Greenland in 2010.

After an 11 hour drive to Aveimore in Scotland I was then working with Mike Margeson for Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team on a winter training course.
The weather on the Saturday was great, Sunday another story, very windy and poor visibility. We did the honourable thing; after 3 were sadly killed in an avalanche the same weekend in another area of Scotland, and didnt venture out. I then had a 5 hour drive back to the lakes where there had been avalanches on Hellvelyn. I will be running more Winter Skills courses please contact me regarding dates etc. cheers.

I took two one season bags, mad or rad?
The summit temp was about -17C and was made even colder by our "poley poley" pace and the effects of altitude. Want to know why and more about my choice of kit for my expeditions; please get in touch with me ?
Winter kit these days dosent have to big and bulky and with application can be honed down, therefore making light of the travel.

Its been a month since my last post and I have been busy. Testing some kit for Furtech, its a great system for our British wet n warm climate. In the recent cold snap all I wore is the Claw 2 and a base layer and trousers. Have a look at the website for the technical information. It should change your mind. I would like to see some changes to the jacket and trousers Overall they work well and can only go from strength to strength.
I have been observing Summer ML Training being run by Tim Blakemore in December great course and very testing. Over the Xmas break I was in Devon to do some kayaking and Surfing with Sarah. However due to lack of water and poor surf ended up with a gourmet xmas break. We went geocaching on Dartmoor and Bouldering at Leigh Tor. I aslo did some Dancing on Ice with Keela, nothing like John Sargent!!

Brrr Cold Weekend

This week I have been mainly assessing. First on an APIOL in Scotland and then this
weekend I have been working with Andy Brown on a ML Assessment.

Bbbrrr!! it was cold but not as the forecast. It was bright blue sunny days and light winds. This helped with the long days and short daylight hours. Tents boots and kit were frozen. I used a Montane Torque Jersey and a Scarab Jacket as my under layers. Both great bits of kit and well designed, sportwool on the Torque Jersey and zoned fleece panels on the Scarab with a hood. Over all that was winter thermic trousers and Superfly XT. I also used a PHD Minim 400, a one season bag in -7!!
I had to wear a hat in bed and kept my prism jacket on. A great cold weekend, hopefully the start of the winter snap.

OMM wet weekend

Am back at home again after another weather bashing this time
at the omm in the lake district.
Its been seen on all the news channels seen on the BBC news and in the newpapers. There have been some harsh repotage in the news if you want to see sensible tales of people who were there check out sleepmonsters .

Autumn Breezes

Well another week of wet weather and winds in the Lakes. Makes picking apples alot easier. Work has involved a mixture of great clients and play has been walking and paddling with Keela the dog.

Thanks to all my clients, UPM Manager's had a taste of the first snows on Hellvelyn. A cold and windy traverse of Englands favourite mountain. Also working on an ML training course with Andy Brown and Terry Hubble. This involved an overnight expedition into Ennerdale West Cumbria. The multifunctionality of my day to day work kit, an Event Montane Superfly XT, is tested from sea level to 3,000ft and proves its worth. I will be putting kit reviews up soon.
I am now looking toward winter if you want to practice winter skills please get in touch for dates etc.

Busy Wet Week

This week has been busy keeping the wolves from the door. I have been working at the weekend for Nav+art course directing their successful mountain marathon and adventure racing training weekend in North Lakes. Mixed warm wet weather provided great training and mini event conditions. During the week that followed another test for the Montane waterproofs and a new set of industrial showa gloves; ideal gloves for wet work outdoors. Please see link for more details.
I have been shadowing a Mountain Leader assessment and training course with Apex Training, a great company based in the Lake District fronted by Paul Platt. Thanks to all there for their help and hope to work with them again.

Wet Wet Wet Continues

The exceptionally wet weather devastating the UK and Cumbria was also making me feel under the weather. I was working for Adventures with Andy Brown and took some people up Skiddaw and then along another Wainwright favourite of Sharp Edge on Blencathra and backdown Halls Fell ridge. Both fantastic classic scrambles.
I really enjoyed the days and a real test for my Montane kit. This week am working for Patterdale Hall with a great group of 6th formers and then for Outward Bound at Eskdale.

Wet Wet Wet

This week I have been working with Rolls Royce Apprentices in the Wet Lake District for Outward Bound Professional. It has rained and hailed and not much else. The group were new to Rolls Royce and to the Lakes. We covered a lot of training using different mediums including Abseiling, Canoeing and Raft Building on the ongoing development od the trainees. Last week I was working with an excellent group of Gurkha Soldiers again on an adventure training week. Its easy to see why they are respected the world over.

Back From Patagonia

I have just returned from a month working in a very cold, -15 at nights, Patagonia. I was working with Team Much a great group of girls from Chlemsford Girls School for BPE Expeditions.

We managed a winter variation of the classic W trek, with great vistas and wildlife sightings. Along with some comunity work in an orphange and vistits to Tierra Del Fuego and parts of S America that was first explored by Darwin and Shakelton.

This is possibly a first expedition by a schools group to winter Patagonia.

We had all 4 seasons in a day every day, whilst on trek. We carried all food and fuel for 8 days in temperatures from 0 to -15.

I used the OMM linkage system again with an Ultra waist pouch

and Classic 32ltr sac as my day kit. Wearing my Montane Verso

and Transactive Jacket for every day kept me warm in this antartic conditions.

For the wet days I used a Montane Superfly XT Jacket a well thought out all round jacket. Thanks to Miseal Perez at Hostel Fitzroy Punta Arenas for all his help. Along with the Outdoor Warehouse Windermere Cumbria.

Work in Patagonia/ PMRT @ 75th Birthday

Am working in Chilliean Patagonia with a great group form Chemlsford girls School for a month for Bull Expeditions.

Work in the Lakes

This week and last I have been working in the Lakes. There has been a contrast in the weather, very hot and then very windy and wet whilst camping out at Bowscales Tarn with a group from Outward Bound.

Last week I was working with Key Network with a school group and a group of managers from MND oil company. A great diversity from 10 year old to coporate managers.

Here are a collection of photos from my recent MMAD days working with Montane. These have been taken a over a few months in Scotland, Wales and the Lake District. Good weather seems to have followed us around the counrty; sometimes not ideal when testing waterproofs. A good crowd of people from various regions doing some good routes in the hills.
